The VIRTUAL EDITION OF THE

8^th International Workshop on Lung Health will take place

ON 13-16 JANUARY 2021

“Treatable Traits: a look forward” will be the main theme of the workshop.

Rising Stars, Posters (in the form of E-poster), live discussions will be preserved, while the Future Health Leaders in Respiratory Medicine programme (FuHeL) has been adapted to this new virtual edition.

Milan, January 13, 2021 – Professors Francesco Blasi* and G. Walter Canonica**, Presidents of the International Workshop on Lung Health announced that the 8^th edition of the workshop will take place virtually from January 13 to January 16, 2021.

The main theme of this edition will be “treatable traits: a look forward”.

The traditional but always innovative tool of “Treatable Traits” will allow the Faculty and specialists from all over the world to explore through a prospective approach, the different respiratory diseases included in the programme, having the aim to find new ideas for research and clinical development, with a special focus on treatments.

Professor G. Walter Canonica, President of the Workshop, stated “The International Workshop on Lung Health always embraces the most important pathologies in the field of respiratory diseases, as asthma, COPD and infections, while large space and time will be dedicated to emerging topics. The challenges we are facing in the recent months stimulate us – even more than in the past – to create effective debates between colleagues. In this sense, the Workshop will dedicate time and energies not only to SARS-CoV-2 , but also to “hot topics” that we should not forget, as severe asthma and therapeutic innovations in the field of asthma and COPD”.

Consequently, the workshop programme will cover, as per tradition, a wide range of topics in the field of respiratory medicine, as asthma and COPD, respiratory allergies, infections and interstitial lung disease. It will include some insights related to new ones, as Covid-19 in the first place, and last but not least updates on rare diseases like Bronchiectasis, Non Tuberculous Mycobacteria infections (NTM) and Cystic Fibrosis. Contribution and real interaction with world experts at close proximity have been the key success factors of this so-called “family meeting”, that effectively allows participants to discuss at the end of each session. The experts, involved in the workshop as Faculty members, make themselves available for 3 days of conversations, exchange and discussions, allowing opportunities of contacts and cooperation, difficult to find in other situations.

An average of 350 specialists coming from 48 countries, 38 Faculty members, as well as worldwide opinion leaders, combined with a large number of specific initiatives for young clinicians and researchers represent key elements that contribute largely to the success of this international workshop format, considered the traditional “pneumology” meeting.

The next edition will innovate including some new training and scientific initiatives:

Protagonist of the workshop since 2017, the Future Leaders Programme –- has been totally redesigned, starting from its new title FUHEL – Future Health Leaders in Respiratory Medicine. This breaking new format of “masterclass” will give the opportunity to 10 young clinicians and research scientists to live 3 days of a full immersion course and guide them in how to approach to clinical, observational and methanalysis scientific publication. Mentored by Prof. S. Aliberti, Prof. Heffler and Prof. G. Sotgiu, the programme will start on January 13th, 2021 and will end on January 15^th, 2021.
As per tradition, the Rising Stars Programme will give the opportunity to young clinicians and researchers to present their scientific research in front of an international audience and become part of the Congress Faculty. The two Rising Star winners will present their valuable work, on January13^th, 2021, at 14.0., before the Opening Lecture.

The collected workshop Abstracts will be published in European Respiratory & Pulmonary Diseases, a peer-reviewed, free-to-access journal. Part of touchRESPIRATORY.com, the journal specializes in the publication of balanced and comprehensive articles written by leading authorities to address the most important and salient developments in the field of respiratory care and pulmonary diseases.

According to Professor Francesco Blasi, President of the workshop “This workshop will give the opportunity to attendees to identify – through an innovative perspective and analyzing emerging aspects- the management of respiratory diseases, looking into new aspects, starting from pharmacology but also looking to the way to manage the diseases globally, while taking into consideration the different conditions. I think we will have a huge discussion – among key opinion leaders and researchers in the field and with young physicians – addressing the topic of “treatable traits” to solve new challenges, as for example, the use of precision medicine in the field of respiratory diseases ”.

L’ottavo International Workshop on Lung Health

“Treatable Traits: a look forward”, la tematica principale del workshop.

Le iniziative relative ai Rising Stars, Posters (nella forma di E-Poster) e le discussioni live saranno preservate, mentre il programma Future Health Leaders in Respiratory Medicine programme (FuHeL) è stato rivisto per adattarsi al formato virtuale.

Milano, 13 Gennaio 2021 – I Professori Francesco Blasi* e G. Walter Canonica**, Presidenti dell’International Workshop on Lung Health annunciano l’ottava edizione del workshop che avrà luogo in modalità virtuale dal 13 al 16 gennaio 2021.

La tematica principale di questa edizione sarà “treatable traits: a look forward”.

Il tradizionale ma sempre innovativo strumento dei “Treatable Traits” consentirà alla Faculty e agli specialisti da tutto il mondo, di affrontare in un’ottica di visione prospettica le differenti patologie afferenti alla medicina respiratoria presenti in programma, al fine di condividere e costruire nuovi spunti di ricerca e implementazione nella gestione clinica delle stesse, con particolare attenzione all’aspetto terapeutico.

Il Professor G. Walter Canonica, Presidente del Workshop, dichiara “L’international Workshop on Lung Health ha sempre dedicato ampio spazio alle tematiche fondamentali della nostra disciplina, dall’Asma alla BPCO, alle infezioni polmonari, oltre a dare ampio spazio anche a tematiche emergenti. Le sfide che stiamo affrontando in questi mesi ci stimolano – ancor più che in passato – ad un confronto intenso e fattivo tra colleghi. A tal proposito il Workshop dedicherà tempo ed energie ovviamente a SARS-CoV-2 ma anche a “temi caldi” che non dobbiamo perdere di vista quali l’Asma Grave e le innovazioni terapeutiche legate ad Asma e BPCO”.

Gli storici pilastri della pneumologia, quali Asma e BPCO, allergie respiratorie, infezioni e patologie interstiziali troveranno di conseguenza ampio spazio in programma, dove grande rilievo sarà dato anche alle più attuali ed emergenti sfide affrontate da pneumologi e colleghi, in primis Covid-19. Infine, giungeranno fondamentali gli aggiornamenti sulle patologie rare, le bronchictasie, le infezioni da micobatteri non tubercolari (NTM) e la fibrosi cistica. Il workshop è stato definito da alcuni partecipanti un “family meeting” dove il contributo di tutti i presenti è fattivo e concreto, a partire dal confronto in aula al termine di ogni sessione. Gli esperti mondiali, coinvolti in qualità di Faculty, si mettono a disposizione di clinici e ricercatori per tre giorni di dialogo, scambio e dibattito, garantendo all’audience occasioni di contatto e collaborazione difficilmente riscontrabili in altre occasioni.

Una forte vocazione all’ internazionalità in medicina respiratoria, grazie agli oltre 350 specialisti provenienti da 48 paesi, la presenza di 38 faculty members, opinion leaders di rilievo mondiale, nonché le numerose iniziative dedicate ai giovani clinici e ricercatori rappresentano le chiavi di questo ormai tradizionale appuntamento della pneumologia.

L’edizione 2021 presenta importanti nuove proposte formative ed iniziative scientifiche:

Il Future Leaders Programme, protagonista del Workshop dal 2017, è stato completamente rinnovato, a partire dal titolo: FUHEL – Future Health Leaders in Respiratory Medicine. Il gruppo di 10 giovani clinici / ricercatori partecipanti vivrà tre giorni di “full immersion”, guidati dai Professori Stefano Aliberti, Enrico Heffler e Giovanni Sotgiu, che avranno il compito di condurli nella lettura ed estrapolazione dei concetti chiave in pubblicazioni scientifiche relative a ricerche cliniche, osservazionali e metanalisi.
Prosegue la tradizione del Rising Stars Programme che darà l’opportunità a giovani clinici e ricercatori di presentare il proprio progetto di ricerca scientifica all’audience del Workshop, divenendo parte integrante della Faculty. I due giovani vincitori del Bando Rising Star precederanno, con le loro presentazioni (13 gennaio 2021 ore 14.00), la lettura inaugurale del Congresso.

Secondo il Professor Francesco Blasi, Presidente del workshop “Il workshop darà l’opportunità ai partecipanti di approfondire – secondo una prospettiva di innovazione – la gestione delle patologie respiratorie, soffermandosi sugli aspetti emergenti, considerando l’aspetto farmacologico ma anche l’approccio globale e onnicomprensivo delle diverse condizioni. Intavoleremo una discussione appassionante, che impegnerà gli opinion leader del settore insieme ai clinici e ricercatori. Il confronto con le nuove generazioni, anche attraverso lo stimolo del tema “treatable traits”, ci aiuterà ad affrontare insieme le nuove sfide, quali – ad esempio – l’applicazione della precision medicine nell’area delle patologie respiratorie.”
